new romantics
   An elite youth subculture and a genre of music confined to the early 1980s. Conceived almost simultaneously in both London and Birmingham, the scene produced bands such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Visage. Concerned as much with image as musical prowess, new romantic bands dominated both the charts and the nation’s bedroom walls from 1981 to 1984, although only Duran Duran garnered critical praise. Taking their musical direction from glam rock and European synth-pop, the new romantics saw themselves as serious, glamorous artists. The music press, however, did not agree, and there were long debates over ‘content versus style’ in the pages of NME and Melody Maker. A new romantic revival (called ‘Romo’) threatened to break out in 1996, but the groups spearheading the movement largely sank without trace.
